The further we get into this window, the better that Gordon fees looks. Newcastle fans were laughing at Barca, saying they’d had their pants down for £70m. Fast forward a few months and Gordon is easily a £100m player in this market, given his output and numbers.

I really rate Alex Scott.

Obviously the market's gone mental this summer, but somewhere between £64m and £80m for Alex Scott is better value than some of the other signings we've seen.

And it makes it even harder for clubs like us who are trying to get back on a level footing and operate smartly.

Comparatively, we're a local, family run business trying to compete with Amazon, Google and Meta.

They kind of do though unfortunately.

They could easily take in £200m this summer from selling Cucarella, Enzo Fernandes, George, Delap and their CB that's been linked with a £30m move (can't remember who that is).

They just have so many players, and never seem to sell at a loss, that they can do as they please. Add in all the loopholes they find and exploit and it's impossible to compete for most teams.

If you're constantly bringing in £200m a summer, and incoming transfers are spread over 5 years, you can basically buy £100m players at will.

Now do they buy the right players? No probably not, but you'd imagine eventually they'll stumble upon success, and getting Alonso in as manager was probably the first step to that happening.

These clubs can only pick so many players. Every time they spend on someone new, someone has to go and oftentimes, that’s a young player, possibly from the academy in the case of Chelsea and City, who’s good enough for the league but maybe not for their team.

I think their money gives them right of first refusal on whoever they like, which is annoying. But the waste opens up a nice avenue for us. We can’t offer the same wages as these clubs but we can offer playing time. So anyone willing to jump ship and join us isn’t just a footballer for the money, they actually want to play so it works as sort of a filter for who’s committed. That plus there’s a lot of talent the big clubs aren’t using.

I think we’re perfectly positioned. Don’t think we can ever become league-winning quality unless the stars align, that ladder has been yanked. But we can definitely become Europa / fringe CL quality this way.

The Rogers fee at £117m is the worst. If he plays like he did the first half of last season, he will tear it up but he has had a couple of really good spells where he looks a great player and some big gaps of pretty average. He's a year older than Bellingham too (I think it's 11 months) so the idea there's a shed load more improvement in him is dubious.

He's not necessarily going to be a dreadful flop but it is a humongous over pay. If you are going to be the most expensive player a club like Chelsea has ever bought, you want be nailed on proven quality and I don't think Morgan Rogers' mom would argue he's that.
