Players you just couldn't take to

Post

Been a while since we've had one of these threads.

It's Phil Neville for me. Not saying he was a dreadful footballer but I don't think he was a great one either. If he'd have spent his entire career with us nobody would say we were holding him back or anything like it. Feel like the 'winning mentality' he was supposed to bring from Man United didn't actually come and if anything it came across like he felt he was doing us a favour and we should be grateful for just finishing 7th.

Him and Moyes both put a ceiling on a team that really was capable of winning something.

Duncan Ferguson. The fact that most tribute reels show about 2 goals and the rest is Jimmy Bullard etc says it all, he's a "legend" more for the bad things he did than good. Poor fitness, poor goal return and poor discipline.

I've actually more time for him now that he doesn't play but even at that it feels a bit like he knows he won't have a management career and certainly won't manage here so he's milking as much out of it as he can.

Mirallas and Deulofeu - all blind alleys and scuffed shots, I don't understand the misty eyed reminiscence when their names come up.

I loved Mirallas until one of the Liverpool players did him in the derby and he never seemed to come back the same player, then his attitude seemed to really deteriorate too after thatm

Yeah doesn’t make my ‘legends’ list either. So much talent. Neville Southall said that if he wanted to be he could have been world class but too many times you had to get him motivated outside of the big games.

Loved him at the time but looking back its ridiculous. Spent so much time injured and getting himself stupidly sent off. On top of that he really was just a bully.

Tim Howard.

Thought he was pretty shite for most of his time here.

Always loved Dunc, proper talisman when he first signed and that's what we desperately needed. Also 1 in 3 goal ratio in his first spell.

He wasn't exactly perfect, but also I just think at the time we needed someone to give us some fight, and he was actually a really good footballer.

Had a lot of negatives but certainly for a while he lifted the club in a way no one else we had at the time could.

It was Suarez.

Looked excellent on the right balancing out the team under Moyes. Then Martinez came in and let him indulge all his worst instincts. Still played well at times but his team play was awful.

Not here for any Deulofeu slander. He ran down blind alleys at times but got to dangerous spots often enough that the lack of efficiency didn’t really matter. Ran up an impressive number of assists in stint two before Martinez threw him back on the bench. Then Koeman came in and decided he’d rather have Bolasie. Total waste of talent, should’ve been a real player for us.

Yakubu - Even despite a good goalscoring return in his first season I remember him only really being good when the rest of the team was playing well, otherwise he was very ineffective and Anichebe would quite often show him up. This was worse when he came back from his big injury and didn’t do much for us in the next two seasons and even went out on loan to the Championship. It annoyed me also that he left for Blackburn for just a million pounds and had one of his best ever goalscoring seasons in the PL with them.

Jack Rodwell - It was more I couldn’t quite understand the hype around him and why he was seen as such an incredible talent. He wasn’t bad although he was injury prone but when Man City came for him for £12m I thought - great, take him.

Francis Jeffers & Anthony Gordon - couldn’t take to either of them right from the outset 🤷‍♂️

I assume we’re supposed to be thinking of players who had well-received stints by a large portion of the fanbase or who had relatively long Everton careers.

The two that immediately come to mind are Ramiro Funes Mori and Cuco Martina. Was distraught that we bothered signing them, they were clearly too dogshit to ever hack it at this level. I don’t think anyone else really took to them either because they sucked as much as I expected so not sure this take counts.

I suppose I could say André Gomes too but I really did want to take to him.

Looked excellent for a handful of games and had me ready to eat my words until he reverted to type.

Shame he never had a footballing brain befitting the rest of his attributes.

Find it hard to answer this one. There's a few I was never that keen on - Andy Johnson was one. Just thought he was a bit shit. Phil Neville used to drive me to distraction with his lack of basic technique.

I didn't mind Big Dunc individually, but I hated the way we played when he was in the team. Anytime we were put under pressure on the ball, we'd pump it long and hope he could do something with it (some would say we've never really changed since then!). Wasn't really his fault, but it reduced our footie to very basic, lowest common denominator stuff.

Tim Howard was annoying as fuck at times. Could make great saves, but was often a liability.

McFadden also wound me up a bit, gives his obvious talent, but general lack of output.

Manuel Fernandes, thought he was nowhere near the player he was made out to be.
