I thought David James was a proper highlights reel keeper. He could pull off absolutely incredible saves right the way through his career but watching him over full games you saw the weaknesses too often. Always felt he was on the edge of a clanger.
Got more reliable as he aged, certainly the first half of his career he was very error prone but he improved a lot in that regard in the second half.
Speaking of incredible saves, I remember the one he did in the saying minutes of a play off against Italy... Finger tips out of the top corner when it looked for all the world it was flying in. Proper top drawer stuff.

According to an update from reliable journalist Alan Nixon [via NUFC Feed], Everton manager Dyche is keen on bringing Nick Pope to the club as a replacement for the under-pressure Pickford.
The Blues boss is thought to be unimpressed with his current goalkeeper's form and would like to see the Newcastle and England stopper come in instead.
This is an intriguing transfer claim, considering what a high-profile figure Pickford is at Everton, becoming firmly England's No.1 during his time at the club. He has been poor so far this season, though, averaging just a 5.97 rating from WhoScored across the four league games.
Opinion may be split as to whether the £60,000-a-week Pope is an upgrade on him or not, but he has proven himself a top-level 'keeper in a Newcastle shirt, playing his part in them qualifying for the Champions League in 2022/23. Shay Given has waxed lyrical over him in the past, too, saying:
"He’s been absolutely brilliant. At the weekend at Selhurst Park, [after making his save to deny Mateta] the reaction, he just got up and thought ‘this is what I do every week - I’ve got this lads, no pressure'. Everyone respects him, he’s a phenomenal goalkeeper. He’s got about everything - he’s brilliant at dealing with crosses and you’ve seen his saves, foot saves and blocks one-on-one."
Sounds like a proper BS article that... Basically a player is off form so Dyche wants to buy an ex Burnley player to replace him, even though Pickford is a superior keeper and had a great season under this manager last year.

Nothing to see here.
I think its depends on what traits constitute being a superior keeper. Picks has largely kept his England place due to his distribution, but I dont think its a coincidence that players like Maguire kept their place in the team to make up for his issues in and around the box.
The biggest thing for me is that despite all of our financial issues, and the amount of churn in the 'top' teams for keepers - United, Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal, im not sure there has ever been a bid for Picks? There has been a bit of speculation, but I dont recall us ever turning anything down, which is a fair reflection on his as a keeper - hes alright, thats it. Personally, id forgo his ability to kick the ball 800 yards straight out of play, or back to the opposition keeper in exchange for him claiming 1 ball in his own 6 yard box.
I think he’s a great keeper and I break out in cold sweats any time I think about what the lunatics in charge would do if they actually had to replace him.
