Merlin Röhl
Re: Merlin Röhl
We have stuffed the midfield area with talented players whilst neglecting the positions with big red warning signs.
So Moyes will shoehorn players into those positions and we'll start the moaning against Palace.

Re: Merlin Röhl
Another young player whose development potentially has to take a step back to play out of position
Hope he’s good there but hope it’s a one off.

Re: Merlin Röhl
I think he fits Moyes' required profile. Tall, athletic, can run all day and can play a bit too.
He's there all season lads.

Re: Merlin Röhl
I don't think while he's young it'll do him any damage, I agree it's not ideal but from Kevin Ratcliffe to Phill Jagielka many have done it and been them better for it

Re: Merlin Röhl
I feel like he's definitely more naturally suited to a midfield role. He can "do a job" at RB, and it's useful to add some pace to the team too, but unless he really kicks on in his defensive awareness I don't see it as a good long term solution. I really like the guy, but if Garner was fit I think he's the better makeshift RB.
On a side note it could actually be interesting to see Garner and Rohl trade off mid-game switching between RB and central midfield depending on the need.
For a squad like our it's definitely helpful to have players who can play multiple roles.

Re: Merlin Röhl
Not advocating the idea of not signing an RB, but Rohl and Johnson flying up and down the right side is going to be some departure from JOB and McNeil.
Re: Merlin Röhl
Was going to post on the Palace thread but its gone so I'll put it here. Röhl positional play was called out, so always worth looking at the key chances the opposition have, see where the issues were in general. 3 main ones are:
00:20 Cross to far post Pickford save.
00:56 Pickford save onto post.
02:12 Palace hit post for 2nd time.
He got caught under the ball for the 2nd one, obviously, but we were set up badly, with Tarks and Branthwaite drawn toward the same attacker. I'd liked to have seen Tarks closer to Nketiah, leaving Jarrod to deal with Mateta.
For the 2nd chance against the post, he was caught up the pitch but as an attacking full back that can happen, so again the CBs should be allowing for that but both getting drawn to Mateta.

Re: Merlin Röhl
His first game at this level at right back. I wouldn't be too harsh on him.
He looked as if he didn't know where to be, whether to go after his passes or stay and how close to be to Tarks.
Moyes must have had a word at half-time as he looked a lot narrower and shut off those gaps.
Tough for the lad defensively. He'll learn the position in time, if we don't bring in someone used to playing there.
