The Football Association has charged Everton forward Martin Sherif with allegedly breaching betting rules over 15 months.

The 20-year-old is accused of placing 61 bets on games between 20 November, 2024, and 12 February, 2026.

Sherif has until Monday, 17 August to respond to the charges.

"Martin Sherif of Everton FC has been charged with breaching the FA's betting rules," read an FA statement.

"It's alleged that the player breached FA Rule E1.2 in respect of 61 bets placed on football matches between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026. Martin Sherif has until Monday 17 August to provide a response."

What a daft way to potential ruin your career before it's really started. Wouldn't have made it with us, but he still could have a decent Football League career ahead of him.

Whoever the photographer was who took that picture of him was the one who shot the sherif.

I don't like his type, I think we're much better off sans-Sherif.

Football covers itself head to toe in gambling adds and sponsorships, and then we moralise about young people with gambling problems.

Late stage capitalism for ya.

Rules are rules but 61 bets in 15 months? That's less than one a week. Assuming they aren't on games he's played in, then the idea someone is in line for a ban multiple times higher than someone who makes a deliberately dangerous season ending challenge seems wildly disproportionate to me.

If someone has a gambling problem, we should be aiming to support them (the volume of bets he has been found to make doesn't really support that idea necessarily but deeper digging might) and we ought to wise up and realise players who are betting in a suspicious and corrupt way are probably not doing it in online accounts registered to themselves.

For years now, it has struck me as completely absurd that a non league player having a £10 first scorer bet on the FA Cup final he is watching at home is committing an offence that could see him banned long term.

There is a complete lack of nuance and common sense.

Certainly the hard line is something done for the image of the sport, rather than the deed itself.

Is there much left to retain?
