Has his demons and flaws for sure but comes across as a quite normal, down to earth guy especially compared to a lot of ex players from that generation.

One conviction for drink driving is one too many but where do you get the “multiple” convictions from ? As far as I can see there was just the one in 2017, let’s not overly demonise the guy, I think that despite his faults he’s a decent human being.

The cheating, horrid.
But alcoholic meaning he has turned out bad and shouldnt be given credit? Come on....
Re: Manager Merry-Go-Round
Cheating, risking people's lives driving drunk... Yes appreciate the addiction angle isn't something to beat someone with, it's more his behaviour in terms of what he does as a result like cheating on his missus constantly and risking people's lives with driving under the influence that I have an issue with.Audrey Horne wrote: ↑Thu Jan 02, 2025 12:49 pm The cheating, horrid.

People from Liverpool will understandably view one of their own favourably but to me his actions aren't that of someone I'd say turned out great. Sure not as bad as some footballers but also there's many who don't do these things too.

Re: Manager Merry-Go-Round
Pretty sure it is just one drink driving conviction (which is one too many I agree) but that's the same number as Jack Grealish got on the same day he recorded a "stay in, stay safe for covid" video and then attended a lockdown party which he drove away from pissed.
He's obviously a significantly less talented footballer but he doesn't get the same level of stick.
Rooney is miles from perfect and his missus has every right to be pissed off with him but by the same token, he's not Joey Barton is he?

In a world full of adversity, we must still dare to dream.
Re: Manager Merry-Go-Round
Meh, cheating is normal in the vast majority of footballer relationships. The wives/girlfriends accept it in exchange for the lifestyle. It's scummy behaviour but that's the scummy world footballers live in.
Doesn't seem to have a chip on his shoulder, seems well liked by his peers and doesn't appear to have too much of an ego. I'd say he's turned out pretty well, ignoring the obvious health issues, considering all the attention on him throughout his career from when he was 16.
I don't think it would have been that surprising if he'd gone down the Gazza route as he's got older.

Actually yeah the article I saw was from 2020 so looked like he'd been done again but wasn't the case.CannockPricey wrote: ↑Thu Jan 02, 2025 1:37 pm Pretty sure it is just one drink driving conviction (which is one too many I agree) but that's the same number as Jack Grealish got on the same day he recorded a "stay in, stay safe for covid" video and then attended a lockdown party which he drove away from pissed.

Definitely not a huge bell end like Barton but would never really look at Rooney and think he's a great example of how to live your life.

'deserves a lot of credit for how he's turned out' so I'd say that's been what's been said in a round about way.
Not sure why people are getting upset that I've said Rooney hasn't really turned out that great. Certainly not a Gazza situation so maybe people just meant he could have ended up in a much worse situation which is something I'd agree with. I also think the football has kept him at least partially on the straight and narrow, the worst may be yet to come as he'll reach the end of his ability to be employed outside of punditry if he hasn't already. Hopefully not but I could easily see him falling on hard times (not money but health) at some point down the line. Fingers crossed that doesn't happen.

Saying someone deserves credit for how they have turned out is nothing like saying someone is a great example of how to live a life.

I mean yeah I'd say that if someone says someone else deserves credit for how they've turned out I'd understandably presume they were a pretty sound person, did something good and generally were an all round nice person.Audrey Horne wrote: ↑Thu Jan 02, 2025 4:17 pm Saying someone deserves credit for how they have turned out is nothing like saying someone is a great example of how to live a life.

Deserving credit for how they turned out because they aren't Joey Barton but still shag around behind their missus back and drink drove is quite a low bar

Whatever else, he seems to genuinely love football, which is far from given with professional footballers.
