World Cup 2026
Re: World Cup 2026
For me, It's a bit chicken and egg as to whether Tuchel or the team were ultimately responsible for how deep they dropped. Do think he got the tactics wrong and was saying it long before the goal that we we were meekly surrendering momentum. Not bringing on a pacy player at all in the last 30 to replace Kane, or have him play in, was the most obvious tactical error for me and encouraged the park the bus approach.
But it does seem to be in England's DNA to play with fear in big games once we score first and take our foot off the throat. Of course it's also down to the opposing team getting more aggressive in response, but I wish we could, bar the last 10 minutes maybe, drill into the team to treat the score as if it's always 0-0; yeah, sure, don't take any risks at the back, but still attack 'em!

Re: World Cup 2026
England's level is usually the first quality team they play. The biggest factor in us doing well in recent competitions is easy draws.Evertonfc15 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2026 7:43 am laura woods has made the most sensible comment - think it was talksport
said englands level is semi finalists and no more
and i think myself
if we had played either france or spain in the final i think we would get battered 3 nil or 4 - 1
Im not sure we would have beaten Portugal, senegal, Brazil or Holland and they were all crap.

Re: World Cup 2026
It absolutely is in our DNA but he was brought in to change things. He picked his favourites, we went for power over control and in the moment he was meant to be different he turned into Southgate x10SouthBlue wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2026 11:10 am For me, It's a bit chicken and egg as to whether Tuchel or the team were ultimately responsible for how deep they dropped. It absolutely is typically England but he added to it when he was meant to bring about change
Re: World Cup 2026
100% this, the whole point of him being appointed was to make the right calls in big games as the antidote to our defend and hang on at all costs approach when going ahead.777Kidnappings wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2026 1:29 pm It absolutely is in our DNA but he was brought in to change things. Instead he took one look at us retreating and giving up space and thought putting on an extra defender and taking off our out ball was the way forward, then compounded it by bringing on another CB and leaving on Kane who was blowing out his arse.
When it clearly wasn't working he did nothing to then rectify it.
The fact we managed 2 successful passes in the 20 mins between us scoring, and them equalising is absolutely damning of his decisions and then lack of decision to change it again.
When you realise those 2 completed passes were Pickford to a CB, and the CB back to Pickford then it is nothing short of criminal.
I just hope the players kick up enough fuss that his position becomes untenable, as the FA won't have the balls to sack him now they've come out and backed him.

They shit the bed by it they're not a shit side. They smashed Croatia who should have beaten Portugal. They'd have done all those other teams.
But England is a quarters/semi team, that's their level. Nothing wrong with that. It just stings because they capitulated so badly the other night

These games are usually quite fun to be fair but I can not be arsed watching this.

Darren Fletcher talking up Pickford replacements.
Probably might be true by the time the next tournaments roll around but hate listening to him.
