Do clubs still do testimonials ? Who was the last player to have a testimonial ? I thought they were a thing before footballers became millionaires from their wages alone.

It is, but he probably came back a better player for it.

The Independent, who broke the news of the 1+1 (I think), said that his additional year is automatically triggered by him playing a set number of games. Don't know what the number of games is.

I think it makes sense though. Gana clearly wanted 2 years which is understandable and the club clearly wanted to be careful about giving 2 years to a 35 year old (even as good as Gana).

He looks like he could go on forever, but still you never quite know when a player's legs will go. They're on top of their game until one day they're not.

So I think this way the club gets the assurance of ''if you make x appearances in this coming season and continue to demonstrate your importance, you can have the 2nd year of the deal automatically''. And I think from Gana's perspective, he'll think ''I can make that number of appearances, no problem, and then I've got the security of the 2nd year''.

And this way the club have the insurance of not having the 2nd year guaranteed if he gets a cruciate ligament injury in October, or if his legs just go in the middle of the season, so we're not saddled with a player who can't contribute next season on the wage bill.

It's a deal that suits all parties.

Duncan Ferguson got a late one and before that Tony Hibbert.

Baines and Coleman have been the only ones eligible for one, but I reckon Baines was too modest.

Perhaps we might see an Everton Sligo Rovers one for Coleman.

I think nowadays they should give the money to charity if they get a testimonial ( I would imagine most would) fans don’t mind forking out for a good cause but to do it so a player gets the equivilant of an extra weeks wages when people are struggling is a bit much.

I'd imagine it just goes to the clubs purse nowadays rather than the individual player.

Personally, I'm a sentimental one, so I'd love to see one for Coleman. Could give Sligo 50% of the takings too, they'd feel the benefit.

Keane will be due a testimonial soon.
