This should have been done and dusted by now. Read that the club is only offering 1 yr and he wants 2. I can't see why you wouldn't make a 2 year deal if the wage is reasonable.

But also no problem negotiating. apart from signing shit players we’ve fucked outselves by just giving players whatever they want. If he wants to stay then he meets us halfway but neither party should just concede to the others demands

The problem is the 2nd season is a big risk for us. At his age he could fall off a cliff. For the same reason 1 year us equally a big risk for him. He can probably get a fair amount more in Saudi and the 2 years.

If we want him it's probably on us to back down.

He’s not falling by iff a cliff until 40 at least. He’s a natural specimen.

In the highly unlikely event he "falls off a cliff" going into year 2, we'd only have to absorb a single year of a bad contract. Compared to the contracts we've give in the past, this would seem well worth the risk IMO.

In fact I find it hard to imagine otherwise, that the second year would be more to our benefit than his.

A bit mindblowing to me that you seem reticent for Everton to offer our best player a 2 year contract, but also think we should keep Michael Keane.

Or have I read that wrong?

Gana will be going for years if he wants - maybe not at Everton but certainly at a decent professional level. He has that specific midfield role down to a tee. His positioning is absolutely first class and so pace/acceleration wont necessarily be a problem as he ages.

He keeps himself in supreme shape and I only see injuries knocking him back. Just look at Ashley Young (purely from a physical fitness perspective). He was 40 years old and was still playing PL football.

Gana goes straight into my premier league era all time Everton XI - crucial that we replace him properly when the time comes.

No we should give him 2 years if that's what gets him to sign. The second year might not amount to much but we aren't gonna get a better player on a year's loan for much less than 10m in fee and wages anyway.

Vital that we keep him but you can understand the clubs thinking on a second year when he'll be 38?? In fairness to the player though he'd get much more money going to Saudi

I'd give him a 2 + a club option of 1 in a heartbeat to keep him next year to be honest.

Ah I see, I thought you were baulking at it.

Even if he dips 30% that second year, he would still comfortably be our best cm since Gaz Baz.

No I love him. 1 of our best players in a very long while. Just saying I can understand why the club don't want to commit to a second season. He'd be worth 2 seasons cost for 1 season like the last 1 though. Got to be fair to him too. I imagine he can get 2 years and on a lot more money in Saudi. We've got to meet him half way

I don't even see him dipping 30% in the second year tbh. He doesn't rely on pace at all and he's an absolute machine. I could see him still playing at a reasonable level at 40, like Ashley Young. You can see that he looks after himself and his positioning is first class, so absolutely no reason why he can't go on for another couple of years yet.

Even watching him playing for Senegal the other night, he's right in the middle of everything. Yes, he got caught in possession for England's goal, but it was a solid performance from him overall. He certainly didn't look out of place and definitely didn’t look like a player seeing out his twilight years.

Oh I agree, I was just saying even if he did dip by that much he’d still be good
