It weakens his negotiating position the longer he goes without a team.

I think he's shot himself in the foot, it looks like even Newcastle are going to spend money on a striker rather take him on a free and they seem to be about the only club seriously linked to him. If he is after big money and a decent signing on fee clubs are going to look at other options that aren't injury probe and actually score some goals. He's possibly priced himself out the market and will end up earning less money than he would if he'd stayed here.

This is not a thinly veiled homophobic jibe at the fashion shoots, this is a belief that he is a strong, intelligent man and if football does not work out for him I can see him being successful in other passions he has.

Might be this happens now... We all know his body is fucked, and maybe he's rejected our contract and isn't actively looking for a club because he's accepted it's better for his long term health and wellbeing to stop playing.

Maybe if someone pays him enough he'll change his mind, but no one's willing to pay that amount so he's unofficially retired unless that changes.

As others have mentioned missing pre-season would be a huge mistake given his fitness issues, so I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him quit and do something else he's passionate about before the season starts.

Fight? If there was any demand at all for his services, he'd already have a club by now. Who are they fighting with?

What some of you are failing to grasp is that the later in the window he goes without a club, the better his bargaining power is with clubs that need/want him. Him not having a club already is not a negative for him, it's the exact opposite.

Not sure on that logic, teams don't need to sign him in the window anyway they can still sign him once it's closed. Think it's more likely that someone will take him to fill their squad rather than him being the main man and that's not going to give him much bargaining power.

Biggest issue for him is his fitness though, with his injury record having little to no pre season and not having played competitive football for about 3 months is a big risk for anyone.

The logic being that if clubs miss out on their main targets (which many will) then more will be in for him. His stock rises the deeper clubs go into the market having not got (all) the players they want/need.

It's been common knowledge for most of the season that he'll be available in the summer and no one came in for him. No one's paying him big money for an injury prone, one in four striker who's had no pre season. It's highly unlikely he's going anywhere as their main striker, they'd have signed him by now to get him fit and ready.

There will be some come and go, 'well we need a striker but you need a job too' but any clubs will be in a better bargaining position than he will be, the longer it goes the less he can try and play one club off another, not that he appears to have any club to play off each other at the moment. It's supply and demand, and right now it doesn't look like there's a lot of demand for him.

He is not getting anywhere near the deal that he turned down at Everton. At best, he'll be a last minute cover signing for a club that didn't necessarily get all the players in that they wanted. He won't be getting anywhere close to first choice striker wages.

Mind you, Mason Holgate managed to bag himself a.contract in Qatar, so you never know...

Free agents pretty much always leave it late in the window to join a club from what I can remember. The hope being that better clubs end up in a hole after missing out ont their targets.

It's a poor way to do it for DCL though. If ever a player needs a pre-season behind him.

If Danny Inngs could get West Ham to give him 130 grand a week to sit on the bench I doubt DCL is looking to downsize just yet.
