Doesn't that phrase mean "would have been more without him (doing what he did)" rather than "would have been more without him (because nobody else could)"

Like it's just general praise of him doing well rather than saying he's the GOAT

I think he played well, with the exception of one pass that resulted in them breaking on us, but even then, this wayward ball did land in their half so there was every opportunity for the team to help him out a bit more.

I think all of the saves he made you would expect any keeper at the tournament to save, but you still have to do them, and he did.

I think he gets overcriticized and nitpicked by media people and fans of other clubs, and I also think in response to that he gets overpraised by some of our fans.

It's not exactly the same in each individual case, but it's the same dynamic lots of fans have with their club players playing for the national team.

Like, I think he had a very good tournament, but I also think he did kick the ball long too much. I think it's ok to say that. Maybe part of that is due to tactics, and not Pickford's fault.

It's like when someone slags your family member off, you get massively protective and defensive, even if the criticism is accurate and you might even say the same thing yourself.

No, to say it would have been 3-4 conceded without him means that another goalkeeper would have condeded 1 or 2 of the 3 saves that Pickford made and I don't think thats true. He played well, and he made good saves, but I don't think they could be categorised as special enough that any of the keepers in the squad wouldn't be expected to make them?

Surely if we're being that literal then "without him" means literally no goalie whatsoever, which tbf regardless of you view on JP1 would surely have fared worse.

Who opened Pickford-Gate? He stopped 2-3 good attempts on goal... any keeper could have saved them but Pickford did. He also saved a pen to keep us in the competition... oh? He didn't score, so maybe he didn't

Also, have zero patience for the "kicked it long too often" brigade.

Happy to accept as a fact that he did - but Spain were pressing like lunatics and the English defence has had a worrying habit of giving the ball away between their own box and the half way line. Can think of one goal, a few chances and a load of surges from it this tournament.

Putting it into midfield may mean the ball comes back at you as likely as not - but it's better than seeing your defence struggle to play out from the back and then panicking when they lose it.

Whether any other keeper would have saved them is irrelevant in my view. The fact is he did everything expected of him and is therefore worthy of being England’s no.1. Not sure why he receives so much negativity from outside our club. I can’t remember many mistakes in an England shirt, certainly fewer than some of the previous incumbents, Ramsdale included.

He's been England's best keeper since Seaman who was pretty much unblemished in an England shirt except the Ronaldinho debacle.

Since then, Hart, Robinson, Carson, Green, James, etc made far more errors than Pickford has in an England shirt, and Pickford has more caps (excluding Hart).

Yeah it wasn't like there was any success when we tried to play out from the back. People are delusional. He kicked it long cos we kept playing ourselves into trouble
