Pronunciation is a weird one. Wimbledon went through a year of 'correctly' pronouncing Alcaraz as Alcarath, but it was weird because he's just the former to most and they didn't do it with any of the other players.

Sometimes it can feel like people are trying too hard when they try and be accurate, nobody refers to Bruno Fernandes as Bruno Fernandch (not sure how to write the correct pronunciation) outside of Portugal.

Haha that makes it even more ridiculous!

I think Brits in general feel really awkward pronouncing things correctly when it comes to other languages tbh, like you'll be mocked for doing so.

I don't think I've ever heard an English commentator say 'fon' instead of 'van' for a Dutch player, and I think one started pronouncing 'Fernandez' 'Fernange' before reverting back to the butchered English version.

My parents are a classic example of this, they won't pronounce my father in law's name correct which is Geert, for fear of pronouncing it wrong (the G is pronounced like someone clearing phlegm from their throat)... So they instead deliberately pronounce it wrong as somehow in their minds this is less embarrassing.

Us Brits are a weird nation.

Is it just Brits though? Like would the Portuguse pronounce Angel Gomes as he pronounces it or would they say Angel Gomge?

Yeah dunno, probably a fair point though. Although his name sort is a bit different as they have that name already.

The equivalent would be a Portuguese player called Alan Shearer.

I've been wishing Neville and Keane would just go away for a very long time.

I get the impression with Neville that someone once described him as quite bright and he misheard it as them thinking he's the northern Stephen Fry. He could benefit from cutting the number of words he uses by about 95%

Managers trying to see a 1-0 lead out with 30-40 minutes left by playing 6 defenders and having no out ball, making conceding and inevitability.

I do get this but the same pundits go on about teams being naive if they continue to push forward at 1 up, don't bring on an extra defender and concede an equaliser and then drone on about the ability to "see a game out and win ugly". Basically if you lose a lead you have taken the wrong approach.

Obviously my post was flippant after that abomination last night and I 100% get what you are saying. But last night is an exception, the decision making was mind boggling and then the decision not to change it again when it clearly wasn't working was utterly absurd, then to not make immediate substitutions at 2-1 was even more so. It was a tactical disaster of absolutely epic proportions, to a level that the average football fan could easily see it coming a mile off. I still can't believe what I saw in a World Cup Semi Final from a so called elite manager.
