The Benitez contract was due to expire June 2026, the new regime gave him the extension, daresay they thought they were protecting his “value” rather than him going on a free but that only works if someone is willing to buy him, which I can’t see.

Re: Mykolenko
True. But I would guess it was more in relation to chasing Digne out of the team for questioning his methods. Which were shit tbf.
Re: Mykolenko
Digne was a much better defender than mykolenko as well.
Never mind the gulf between them both going forward.

The original signing yes, but Digne had long gone when Mykolenko contract was enhanced and extended.Toddacelli wrote: ↑Thu Aug 13, 2026 2:01 pm True. But I would guess it was more in relation to chasing Digne out of the team for questioning his methods. Which were shit tbf.

Re: Mykolenko
He's regressed a lot this last year.
I was never a big fan of his, but he seemed ok ish in defence.
However he is now far and away the weakest link in the team and really is not premier league standard.
If he was made available for transfer i honestly believe nobody in the league including the promoted teams would touch him.
A really poor decision to extend his contract

Re: Mykolenko
He’s a good one on one defender and rarely gets dribbled past which is why he can have great games against players who hug the touchline to receive the ball and then try to dribble.
His defensive positioning has always been poor though and he looks awful when there’s movement between him and the CB as he switches off frequently - this is why he looked so bad ça Newcastle

Our fans created a myth around him off a one game against Mo Salah and it’s stuck.

Re: Mykolenko
Given we seem to really struggle to spend then I'm not sure adding another £25m to buy his replacement is better than retaining him tbh... Mainly because we don't likely have another £25m meaning we just end up not replacing him.
