That’s valid. I’d like to see O’Brien start more at CB as well.AjaxAndy wrote: ↑Thu Jul 16, 2026 1:22 pm Where's does that leave Jake though (assuming we sign an RB)?
He's 24, played 18 months out of position and seems to be potentially a fantastic CB who would fantastically compliment Branthwaite should he be able to stay fit.
I'd not be in to us signing anyone who will push him down the pecking order further than he is currently. We've given him the first part of the Lescott treatment, now it's time for the second part.
Could be our CB for the next decade, just need play him instead of giving his minutes to an ageing perma crocked Stones.
I’m thinking about Stones taking Keane or Tarkowski’s place in the squad. O’Brien and Branthwaite both have major potential, I think it would help them to have an experienced mentor like Stones who can help them use the ball better (I have no concerns about Moyes getting them to defend at a high level) to be the best they can possibly be.
One of Keane or Tarkowski is sold off, the other stays as fourth choice, Stones plays when able, and we work towards a future where O’Brien/Branthwaite is the first choice pairing. It’s pure theory but I assume both players benefit from training with someone who’s won at the highest levels of the game like Stones.
Maybe the price isn’t right, maybe the personalities involved don’t work with Tarkowski wearing the armband regularly. But he’s older and starting to become rasher in some of his decisions. If he has any value to a newly promoted side, I’d take it and run. Keane can do a job as long as the person next to him has recovery pace.

Have to imagine wages will be fairly reasonable as well.
I think it’s worth it for that sort of fee and manageable wages given the age profile and potential upside if he improves in the final third.

We always get told from a young age that money doesnt grow on trees. It’s almost beginning to feel pointless, and I really do feel for Newcastle and Villa, who have made great progress in the last few years, doing things the right way.
Except for a select few football clubs like United, Chelsea and Spurs, where they can fail miserably and just spend their way out of a hole.
It’s going to be difficult for fans to come to terms with having to build this project slowly over years. But we have to buy right.
I have been massively impatient with the lack of a right back. But as long as we get the next move right, thats actually all that matters. We cant afford too many mistakes in the transfer market unlike those that can spend £200-£300m a year.

Inter apparently in talks for Spence, so if that's true I think we can safely cross that one off the list.

This recruitment team have now had a full year from last summer's disastrous one in terms of a right back to get their house in order.
JOB still lining up there first game of pre season.
I really feel for the lad.

Re: Summer Transfer Window 2026
Think if we’ve decided on a budget for right back of 20mil or less I’d rather find out what players we can get for that price and go after them in order of preference. Don’t want a summer of chasing players that selling clubs value at double what we are willing to spend and then ultimately ending up with nothing
This summer is when we sort out that right back position. Absolute joke if we don’t

Re: Summer Transfer Window 2026
He's on 35k a week playing, what's there to feel sorry about? There aren't any guarantees he gets in the team when we get a right back, so I bet he prefers this to the alternative.
You should be feeling sorry for us that might have to put up with seeing him play there
