How do we justify paying someone with 1 premier league goal this season 100k a week plus? If he was still at Ipswich and moving now he wouldn't get much more than half that. I dont know why we would want to assume the risk of that contract74Blue wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2026 3:35 pm Would not want to pay a penny more than what Chelsea laid out for him. He's still young enough to come good, but he's definitely not a sure thing. £30m for a young centre forward who may or may not work out is OK I suppose. Wouldn't want is to be spunking any more than that though, especially given that he's going to want a proper wedge too.

Re: Liam Delap
Really not bothered by how he’s performed at Chelsea. Was a terrible stylistic fit from the moment he signed.
Metrics were all around league average in a terrible Ipswich team. Put him in a team that will lean into the industrial side of his game a bit more and he's a quality player and decent value for money (as long as the money is similar to what Chelsea paid last summer).

Well his valuation can’t have gone up, his wage will be a problem as he won’t want to give up a big percentage of that. Loan would be my choice with set fee.

Im not really bothered by 1 seasons poor but id want to be playing what hes worth and it will be move governed by what chelsea are paying him. 30m is fine but there's no way we should be getting much past half what chelsea signed up for. Hes not going to accept a 50% paycut which for me just means wed be taking over chelseas mistake.kramer wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2026 5:51 pm Really not bothered by how he’s performed at Chelsea. Think that Chelsea are a rabble of kids with no leadership within or above them.... think that's why he's failed there.
I do think Moyes could straighten him out and get him scoring in a proper system, as he was at Ipswich, but I still don't know if I'd like it.

Surely we're looking to sign players on what we think they can add to our team, not what they haven't added to another?777Kidnappings wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2026 6:35 pm Im not really bothered by 1 seasons poor but id want to be playing what hes worth and it will be move governed by what chelsea are paying him. 30m is fine but there's no way we should be getting much past half what chelsea signed up for. This logic that he hasn't performed well for Chelsea therefore he has to take a 50% paycut is fantasy and a bit ludicrous.
Surely we'd be assessing against Barry and Beto -where we think he'll be in our pecking order, expected games and contributions etc, then coming up with a pay structure that we think is appropriate. Personally, I don't think he's worth signing, but if that's the direction we went then he would be signed with the intent of being our number 1 striker imo, and with that usually comes a premium as that's the position that is hardest to fill and arguably the most important on the field.

Re: Liam Delap
Its fantasy because he wont take what hes worth because hes got a long contract at double that. Thats currently chelseas problem we dont have to make it ours.Raptor wrote: ↑Sun May 03, 2026 11:00 am Surely we're looking to sign players on what we think they can add to our team, not what they haven't added to another?

Re: Liam Delap
Well he probably only has one or two seasons to re-prove his worth before potentiality falling off everyone's radar - will it turn around for him at Chelsea?
Or will he have to start again...
Not sure 100kpw is that out of reach, we've half a dozen players already earning more than that.
5 more years on his contract might be difficult to get past.

We can afford it but is he worth the risk. The 150k a week he got was partly because of his ipswich form and partly because he had a clause in his contract that kept the fee artificially low. Neither of them are reasons anymore. Plus even at 100k a week its asking him to give up about 7m after tax.
Re: Liam Delap
Oh Capology and another source had him on 100k, which was what I was basing that on. If it's actually 150 then that might be a bit steep.
To get a 15-20 goal striker we're actually going to have to be very lucky spending 25m and 50kpw and striking it lucky one of these days, or just go out and buy certainty.

Re: Liam Delap
I think this is a fair point, just because someone has failed elsewhere doesn't mean they'll fail here. Especially when we have a history under Moyes of taking under performing potential and converting it in to a key player for us previously.Raptor wrote: ↑Sun May 03, 2026 11:00 am Surely we're looking to sign players on what we think they can add to our team, not what they haven't added to another?

I definitely wouldn't be giving him a £100k+ a week contract, but if Chelsea paid £25k a week to get him off the books then that would sit a lot more comfortably.
He's a good finisher which neither of our current options are, and fits Moyes' requirements to run the channels... Hold up play and winning ariel duels against big CBs I'm not so sure about though.

HmmmRobioto wrote: ↑Wed May 28, 2025 7:34 pm Chelsea is such a shit move IMO. I think it's the most soulless of all the clubs in the league and they make no secret of treating players like assets. He'll have a few bad games, be dropped, be farmed out on loan and disappear. Whenever a promising young player picks Chelsea, I find it so disappointing.
Re: Liam Delap
His valuation could have easily gone up. Don't forget he had a buyout clause in his contract for 30m, if he didn't have that hour much do you think he would've gone for after his season at Ipswich? I wouldn't be surprised if it was double that.Bluebridge wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2026 5:56 pm Well his valuation can’t have gone up, his wage will be a problem as he won’t want to give up a big percentage of that. Chelsea got, what a lot thought at that time, a bit of a bargain. We paid more for Barry without the English tax. Chelsea aren't mugs in the transfer market, so I wouldn't be surprised if they do want more than they paid
