Outside of footie they are generally thought of as an over training injury, typically doing too much too soon, that's more where my knowledge of these things are. I'd imagine with footie its an impact injury, similar to Rooney

There's several different types with differing severities. My lad had one with his running. If its his foot, likely to be his metatarsal. He'll be in a boot for at least 6 weeks and do none impact stuff to keep his fitness up. Bit different for contact sports though, that is based on my boys injury ...
