Yeah, it's a shitty way to get knocked out. I can't imagine the league punish Southampton to any significant degree too which probably makes it even more galling to them.

I don't really know what the laws say are options as punishment for this sort of infraction? I assume if there was a set response to this sort of thing they'd have done it already.

Honestly though, one off thing, maybe it's worthy a big fine? If there is a paper trail and they've been doing it and it's helped them go on this amazing run of form...really at that point I'd lean towards they should be kicked out of the promotion race.
